The European Commission has presented a new circular economy package aiming to make almost all physical goods on the EU market more friendly to the environment. Carlsberg Group has already invented environmentally friendly packaging types.
A just green transition requires workers involvement. A Norwegian company Glava has succeeded in finding climate change solutions by involving the workers. A “sustainability day” is one way to involve and generate green ideas that can improve environmentally sustainable production.
Despite widespread electrification there will still be emissions to address in 2030. Part of the solution should be carbon capture storage (CSS).
Pia Olesen and Nina Heidelbach work to enable the green transition at their workplace, the company Alfa Laval in Aalborg. Therefore, the two worker representatives have participated in HK Private’s course “Climate Activism at the Workplace”, and established a climate committee. HK is Denmark’s largest union for salaried employees.
The coal phase-out is accompanied by a boost of renewable energy expansion. The aim is to combine the expansion of wind and solar power, phasing out coal, and structural change in achieving a socially just, reliable, and legally certain exit from coal.
On the 17 November, FIU, the internal educational system for all member organisations of the Danish Trade Union Confederation arranged a conference in Helsingør. The conference was aimed at establishing the roles for worker representatives in enabling the green transition. The time to act is now, and FIU’s conference was an important contribution to the process of
bringing the transition to the workplaces.
As we are trying to gain control over the immense challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, the term “just transition” is, rightfully so, receiving increased attention and recognition on the international agenda.
As of 2050 oil and gas will no longer be retrieved from the North Sea. Now phasing out its non-renewable energy production to meet the objective of climate neutrality by 2050, Port Esbjerg is initiating a gradual transition from its strong position in the field of oil and gas, to the development and production of green energy and green jobs.
We can only reach the climate targets for 2030 if the private and the public sectors cooperate. In addition to the strengths of the corporate sector, we must take advantage of the potentials inherent in our state, regions and municipalities. While the public sector itself is responsible for a relatively small amount of total carbon emissions, its power of influence has a much larger scope.
