Baltic Sea countries fights Russian gas in green collaboration

Last week the nations of the Baltic Sea met in Marienborg for a historic summit in order to make agreements on how to become independent from Russian gas and use the Baltic Sea for green energy

In FH’s Climate Plan, we propose a strategy for the circular economy and development of climate-friendly materials in Denmark. And we emphasize the importance of involvement of workers.

The Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, met at Marienborg in Denmark with Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission and the prime ministers of Germany, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

They met as a result of the European energy and security crisis, to collaborate against black energy and against the security threat Putin and Russia have become.

FH: first organization to present detailed climate plan

The Danish Trade Union Confederation (FH) strongly supports the green transition. In fact, we were the first organization to present a detailed plan for how to achieve Denmark’s 2030 target

In our plan, we proposed that EU should increase its climate target. The EU should aim to reduce emissions by more than 55 percent in 2030.

Russia’s invasion has further underlined the need for EU climate ambition. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, phasing out fossil fuels, and security goes hand in hand.

This is the second time this year Denmark have been in the center of an Energy Summit – last time it was the port of Esbjerg and the Northern Sea Energy Summit that created international focus and green opportunities, this time the Baltic Sea is entering the green transition.

“There is one point in particular that I need to stress: The demand for skilled labor will be huge. We need skilled workers to build the windmills, the wind farms, and the necessary energy grid” Bente Sorgenfrey, Vice President the Danish Trade Union Confederation

In the agreement the nations have signed a goal of duplicating the amount of sea-wind energy 7 times in the Baltic Sea before 2030 – so in less than 8 years the Baltic Sea must produce 7 times more sea wind energy than it does today. At the same time this energy should be easily transported and sold between the nations, securing a common energy-net between the countries is therefore a means they have agreed to work for.

This means that we need to invest in education. And we need to convince people to choose or re-train for vocational educations and skilled jobs. Skilled workers will be the frontline workers and heroes of the green transition

The Marienborg Declaration, The Baltic Sea Energy Security Summit:

As countries surrounding the Baltic Sea, we are ready to respond to Russian aggression in the field of energy. We are determined to strengthen our energy cooperation and energy resilience in support of our efforts to phase out our dependency on Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible while contributing to climate neutrality in the EU.
